Guardian Deity of Uttarakhand & Protector of the Char Dham
Perched dramatically on an elevated stone sanctum rising directly above the rushing turquoise waters of the Alaknanda River at Kalyasaur, Maa Dhari Devi Temple is revered as the supreme Guardian Deity (Rakshak Devi) of Uttarakhand and the holy Char Dham.
According to ancient legend, the upper half of the idol of Goddess Kali washed ashore at Dharo village after a celestial voice commanded a local dhobi (washerman) to enshrine the deity on a river rock. The lower half of the idol is worshipped at the sacred Kalimath Temple in Rudraprayag, forming an inseparable spiritual continuum.
A remarkable miracle observed by pilgrims is that the sacred idol of Maa Dhari Devi is said to change its appearance throughout the day: appearing as an innocent girl in the morning, a radiant young woman at noon, and a serene, wise old grandmother by evening. Located right on the Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway (NH-7) between Srinagar and Rudraprayag, every pilgrim halts here to seek the goddess's divine protection.
