Hidden Kashi of Garhwal · Vishwanath Temple & Kedarnath Gateway
Poised gracefully on a ridge high above the sacred turquoise curves of the Mandakini River at an altitude of 1,319 metres in Rudraprayag district, GuptKashi (literally "Hidden Kashi") is one of the most spiritually charged towns in the Garhwal Himalayas. Regarded as spiritually equal in merit to Varanasi (Kashi), GuptKashi is revered for its ancient stone temples, sacred bathing kunds, and unhindered views of the snow-clad Chaukhamba massif.
According to epic Mahabharata folklore, after the cataclysmic battle of Kurukshetra, the Pandava brothers sought Lord Shiva to seek forgiveness for fratricide. Lord Shiva, wishing to avoid them, hid himself in disguise as a bull at GuptKashi (hence "Hidden Kashi"). When Bhima recognized the lord, Shiva dove into the earth, with different parts of his divine bull body emerging across the sacred Panch Kedar shrines—his hump at Kedarnath, arms at Tungnath, face at Rudranath, navel at Madhyamaheshwar, and hair at Kalpeshwar.
At the heart of town stands the ancient Vishwanath Temple. Constructed of massive dark granite blocks by the Katyuri kings in the 10th century and later renovated, the temple features a sanctum enshrining a revered Shiva Lingam. In the courtyard lies the sacred Manikarnika Kund, fed by two stone-carved water spouts shaped like the heads of a cow (Gomukh) and elephant, through which subterranean streams representing the holy rivers Ganga and Yamuna perpetually flow.
Just beside the main shrine stands the rare Ardhanarishvara Temple, enshrining Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati depicted as an inseparable single composite deity, symbolizing the cosmic balance of masculine and feminine energies.
In modern times, GuptKashi has become an indispensable logistical lifeline for pilgrims undertaking the Kedarnath Yatra. The town and its surrounding plateau (Phata, Sersi, and Guptkashi helipads) house the primary helicopter aviation bases operating shuttle flights directly to Kedarnath helipad in just 8 minutes.
Across the Mandakini gorge sits Ukhimath (winter seat of Kedarnath), while down the valley lies Kalimath, one of the 108 supreme Shaktipeeths where Goddess Kali defeated the demon Raktabeej.

Heavy rainfall paints the Mandakini valley radiant green. Waterfalls roar down cliffs; helicopter flights and highway traffic face periodic weather holds.
Crisp sunny days with cold mountain nights. The snowbound Chaukhamba peak stands out with breathtaking clarity against deep azure winter skies.
