Perched dramatically atop an isolated pyramidal ridge at an elevation of 1,859 metres, Banasur Ka Kila (also spelled Vanasur Fort) is one of the most intriguing historical and mythological landmarks in Kumaon. Located just 7 km from Abbott Mount followed by a scenic 1.5 km uphill footpath, the fortress commands an unobstructed 360-degree vantage point overlooking the lush Lohaghat valley, winding river gorges, and the Great Himalayan range.
According to Hindu mythology and regional folklore, this fortress was the legendary seat of King Banasur, the powerful thousand-armed demon king and devout worshipper of Lord Shiva. Banasur’s daughter, Usha, fell in love with Aniruddha, the grandson of Lord Krishna. When Banasur imprisoned Aniruddha, Lord Krishna arrived with his army, fighting an apocalyptic duel in which Banasur’s arms were severed before his life was spared by Shiva’s divine intervention.
Today, the weathered stone ramparts, ancient watchtowers, and bastion ruins tell stories of medieval warfare under the Katyuri and early Chand dynasties. Walking through the fragrant oak and rhododendron forest to reach the summit rewards hikers with cool mountain breezes and some of the finest sunrise and sunset vistas in northern India.
Delightful sunny days with blossoming rhododendrons, wildflowers, and crystal-clear mountain horizons. Ideal for nature walks, photography, and escaping plains heat.
Drifting mountain mist, lush green mossy trails, and intense petrichor fragrance of damp pine woods. Slower pace of life for contemplative retreats.
Autumn brings crystal-clear blue skies and razor-sharp snow peak panoramas. December to January brings freezing temperatures and occasional enchanting snowfall.
Gradual to moderate uphill slope; takes about 35 to 50 minutes at a leisurely walking pace.

Legend holds that the demon king Banasur ruled here. His daughter Usha married Krishna’s grandson Aniruddha. When Banasur imprisoned him, Lord Krishna fought an epic battle here, severing Banasur’s 1,000 arms.
